Angels at Alpha

A multitude of angels descended upon Alpha Company over the last weekend in January. The Guardian Angels were a gift from The Rev. Twyla Zittle, St. Raphael Episcopal Church, Colorado Springs Colorado. Rev. Twyla has made thousands of angels, and it has become a fun ministry and hobby. She asked if the girls at The Howe School might like an angel. They were delivered the last Saturday in January and were received with joy. Rev. Twyla is a friend of Chaplain Fleming.

Cadet Zhou to Compete at ISSMA State Competition

Cadets Elizabeth Hasse and Yunan Zhou participated in the Group 1 level at the Indiana State School Music Association instrumental contest on Saturday, January 28. Cadet Hasse earned a bronze medal on her difficult ‘Gypsy Rondo’ solo on alto saxophone and Cadet Zhou earned a gold medal on his Mozart piece on clarinet. Zhou will move on to the state level competition in Indianapolis on February 25.

Cadet Zinyak to Compete at IHSAA Semi-State Wrestling Tournament

For the second year in a row a Howe cadet has qualified to compete in the IHSAA semi-state wrestling tournament. Cadet Igor Zinyak qualified by defeating Dustin Smallwood of Fairfield by a 9-2 decision in the 160 lb. bracket at the Goshen regional tournament on Saturday, February 4. Cadet Zinyak placed 4^th at regionals and has a record of 18-4 this season. His career record in his two years at Howe is 35-11. He will face Jesse Goodnight of Kokomo in an early qualifying match at the War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne on Saturday, February 11.

Dear Alumni & Friends,

It is with great pleasure that we invite you to join The Howe School Director of Development, Jean Miller, and Chief Financial Officer, Kevin Bouma, along with other alumni and friends for one of Howe’s 2012 Florida gatherings.

The first gathering will be Monday, February 27 at Marina Jack, 2 Marina Plaza, Sarasota. The evening begins with a social time at 6:00 pm, followed by dinner at 6:30. Dinner selections will be from the menu and range from $25.00 - $45.00 per person.

The next dinner event will be Tuesday, February 28 at Hemingway’s Island Grill, The Shops at Coconut Point, 8001 Plaza Del Lago #113, Estero. Cocktails begin at 6:00 pm, followed by dinner at 6:30. Menu selections range from $15.00 - $35.00 per person.

The southeastern gathering will take place on Thursday, March 1 at Sugar Reef Tropical Grill, located at 600 N. Surf Rd., Hollywood (between New York and Fillmore Streets). You are invited to arrive at 6:00 pm for a reception and cocktails. Dinner will follow at 6:30. Menu prices range from $16.00 - $30.00 per person.

The last of the Florida dinners will be held at Fishlips Waterfront Bar & Grill, located at 610 Glen Cheek Dr., Port Canaveral (next to the cruise ship terminals), on Friday,

March 2. We will begin the evening with cocktails at 6:00 p.m. followed by dinner at 6:30. Dinner selections range from $15.00 - $30.00.

New Academic Advisor, Marina Hoover

Marina Hoover, formerly a math teacher for The Howe School, has been hired as the new Academic Advisor. Marina will be offering choice of career and/or college/university services to Howe students. She will also be responsible for guiding students in selecting the right course of study based on the student’s interest.

Mrs. Hoover will monitor student progress, college and career advising, testing (ordering, scheduling, analyzing) and transcript data input. As well, her position will include the following responsibilities:

Provide guidance to the students on their career and college choices
Provide assistance in choosing a career option
Keep track of the student’s documents (college applications, etc.)
Maintain relationships with faculty members to help ensure recommendation forms are filled out for student college applications
Provide support to concerned colleges and universities or institutions as needed
Provide the information necessary for the schools testing needs and implementation of such tests as SAT, ACT, ECA, etc…
Data input of cadets’ transcript information from their previous schools to ensure the cadet has a formal Howe School transcript
Coordinate college visits to Howe
Coordinate transportation for student visits to college fairs, colleges and similar events when required
Maintain contact with parents/guardians concerning their student’s college application processes

National Geography Bee Results

The Howe School Junior High held its annual school-level National Geographic Bee on December 15. Cadet Christian Gerren, an eighth grade day student at Howe and the son of Jill Gerren-Zugay of Howe, won the competition in the championship round. Cadet Ilia Glazman, an eighth grader and the son of Nataliya and Alex Glazman of Mishawaka, took second place; Cadet Kenny Frey, a seventh grader and the grandson of Craig and MariJo Hutton of Fishers, took third place; and Cadet Zach Yanakeff, a seventh grader and the son of Kimberley Zocharski of Sterling Heights, MI, took fourth place.

The competition tested students on the subject of geography in its broadest sense. Questions varied and required knowledge of place names, a skill bases to geography, and the location of cultural and physical features. The distribution and patterns of languages, religions, economic activities, populations, and political systems were also covered. Cadet Gerren won the championship round by answering this question: “What large island country is located off the coast of Mozambique?” The correct answer is Madagascar.

The school-level bee was the first round in the annual National Geographic Bee. For a chance to compete at the state level, the school winner will take a qualifying written examination and must be chosen as one of the top 100 students in the state based on the test scores. State winners advance to the national finals held in late May to compete for scholarships in the amount of $25,000, $15,000 and $10,000.

Howe Cadets Give Back to Community Through LIFE Program

Recently The Howe School LIFE members donated their time and services to students at Meadowview School. LIFE members assisted the younger students with coloring pictures and card making.

The LaGrange County Community Foundation works with local donors and volunteers to improve the quality of life for LaGrange County residents through grants, scholarships and the wise use of all available resources. Their mission is to inspire and sustain generosity, leadership and service. Students from LaGrange County, including Howe Cadets, participate in this program each month.

Help Howe Students Support The Animal Shelter

The Howe School is reaching out to the community and needs your help! We are working with the LaGrange County Animal Shelter to do what we can to help care for the many homeless animals.

Please consider donating items for our community cause. The Animal Shelter is in need of the following items:

· Science Diet dog and cat dry food (the shelter receives donated food from Science Diet and can use this brand of food only).

· Science Diet dog and cat canned food (again, only this brand of food).

· Collars

· Leashes

· Dog and cat toys

· Blankets

· Monetary donations to help with spay and neutering costs

We will be collecting donated items in the Development Office until January 14, 2012, just after first semester exams.

Speech Team Does Well at Northrop

The Howe Speech Team traveled to Northrop Saturday morning. Our team of 8 came home with three ribbons. Both Jackson Harter and Lawrence Gore placed 3rd and 4th respectively in discussion; they were competing against 32 other students. Elizabeth Hasse competed against 30 other students in Prose and came home with an eighth place ribbon. Our next meet is next Thursday, December 8th at Bethany Christian. Go Speech!

Howe Cadets Serve as Ushers at Annual Convention for Diocese of Northern Indiana

This year the 113th Convention for Diocese of Northen Indiana was held in South Bend. There was plenty of excitement in the air as the Presiding Bishop of The Episcopal Church, The Most Rev. Dr. Katharine Jefferts Schori, preached and celebrated.

We were proud that two of our cadets were selected to serve as ushers. They also assisted during communion under the direction of Deacon George Douglass. It is always a great opportunity for the cadets to experience other worship opportunities and to meet others in the wider community. Their services were greatly appreciated.

Cadets Serve at St. John of the Cross Service

Several of the Howe Cadets traveled to St. John of the Cross Episcopal Church, Bristol Indiana to assist in the service of Celebration of New Ministry of their Chaplain, the Rev. Carol S. Fleming. The Color Guard did an outstanding job. The folks at St. John of the Cross (SJOC) were quite impressed with the Color Guard. The Cadets served as readers, intercessors, presenters, and acolytes. The night was a great celebration bringing together both of the ministries of Chaplain Fleming. Fleming serves as Chaplain to the Cadets at The Howe School, conducting weekday and Sunday Services as well as Priest In Charge at SJOC, Bristol Indiana.

Chaplain Fleming said, "It was great to have the participation of the Cadets and to meet and interact with the folks from the parish of SJOC. The Cadets have been given an open invitation to come back and worship anytime. SJOC has already started working on making arrangements for that to happen. I would also like to thank Dcn. George Douglass for bringing the Cadets and serving as Deacon of the Table that evening.

Volleyball End of Season Results

On Friday, October 17th, we traveled to LaLumiere to face them for the second time this season. Howe played tough against them, and almost came close to having a win on a couple of the games! Even though we did not come out ahead we definitely made the other team work for their victory. Here are the results from that game: Crystal Vaughn had 3 blocks, 1 assist, 2 kills, and 2 aces; Tayler White had 1 assist, 1 kill, 1 ace, and 2 digs; Winnie Lo had 1 ace and 1 kill; Lily Wojtas had 2 digs; Christine Slamkowski had a whopping 6 aces!

Last Thursday, we had our sectional match against Bethany Christian – they were one of the toughest teams we’ve played this season. Here are the stats from the match: Winnie Lo had the only 2 aces of the match, as well as 3 assists; Brittany Dunlap had 1 dig and 1 assist; Crystal Vaughn had 1 dig, 1 assist, and 1 kill; Lindsey Grippo had 2 kills; and Tayler White was able to put down 5 kills on her opponents.

I have enjoyed working with these ladies this year – they have put in a lot of hard work, and improved a lot over the season. They were a great representation for Howe athletics by their good sportsmanship, teamwork, and perseverance. Even though we didn’t have a winning season, I am proud of what these girls have accomplished individually, as well as a team. Thanks for a great volleyball season ladies!

Cadet Mellen Awarded Criscio Memorial Scholarship

The Howe School (formerly Howe Military School), a private co-educational college preparatory school for grades 7-12 located in northeastern Indiana, is pleased to announce that Cadet Zachary Mellen was awarded the Domenic Vito Criscio Memorial Scholarship during The Howe School’s Founders’ Day Weekend activities.

Domenic Vito Criscio attended Howe Military School from 2001 until 2004. Vito was proud of Howe and for his dedication and leadership was appointed to be the battalion executive officer his senior year. Sadly, however, he lost his life the summer before in an automobile accident. To honor future executive officers for their accomplishments and determination, the Domenic Vito Criscio Memorial Scholarship was established.

Cadet Mellen, a senior at The Howe School, was presented the award by Mr. and Mrs. Criscio on October 2 at the Sunday chapel service. He is the son of John Mellen of Bloomfield Hills and has attended Howe since August 2007.

Volleyball Battles Hard Against Hamilton

Last Thursday, the Lady Wildcats traveled down to Hamilton for their varsity match, which was our best match to date. The ladies worked well together as a team and gave Hamilton a run for their money! We had a new addition to the team, Christine Slamkowski, which added more depth to the team. Christine had 2 digs, a spike, and an ace for her first game. Winnie Lo had a great game with 3 assists, 2 kills, and 1 dig; Crystal Vaughn had 2 aces, 3 blocks, and 1 dig; Lily Wojtas had3 digs; Brittany Dunlap had 1 assist, 1 dig, and 2 blocks; Tayler White had 1 assist, 4 kills, and 2 blocks.

We saw a lot of great plays from the girls that night, and hope to see them finish out strong for our last 2 games, as well as sectionals. Our last home match is Tuesday against Burr Oak, so wish them luck!

Football Team Moves to .500

This past Saturday, the Howe Cadet Wildcats played the Battle Creek Apocalypse from the Christian Football League of Michigan hosted at Trine University. The team put together it’s best outing of the year, shutting out Battle Creek, and picking up their third consecutive win by a score of 44-0.

The defense held Battle Creek to just 4 first downs on the day and gave up 25 yards rushing and 84 yards receiving. Zach Mellen sparked the defense with 2 interceptions, one of them yielding an 18 yard touchdown.

Offensively, the team put together their first game of nearly 400 yards of total offense. The full-house backfield of Kanamugire, Zinyak, and Macut combined for 4 of the teams 6 touchdowns and amassed 345 yards rushing. Jack Harter connected to Larry Gore for a 35 yard touchdown pass.

The 4-4 Cadet Wildcats close out the 2011 season this Saturday at LaLumeire at 2 p.m. (EST) in their quest for back-to-back winning seasons. Dating back as far as 1950, the history books have not found a Howe football squad that managed consecutive winning records.

Colonel Trout, a Howe School Icon, Passes Away at Age 79

William “WC” Trout, known to most simply as the “Colonel”, died at his home in Union City, Georgia on September 24th, 2011. He was 79 years old. A soldier, a combat veteran, an educator and mentor, his was a life of service. He was born February 14, 1932 in War, West Virginia and attended Big Creek High School. He joined the Army in 1950 and proudly served for over 20 years, including two tours of duty in the Korean War where he earned the Purple Heart Medal.

After retiring from the United States Army in 1971, he worked for Howe Military School until 2001. During his thirty years at the school, he served as a Tactical Officer and as the Commandant of Cadets. He touched countless lives during his tenure, having a profound effect on generations of cadets. He took great pride in his accomplishments at Howe, which included adopting the Honor Code, authoring the Rules and Regulations or R&R, and was instrumental in accepting females as fulltime students. He was an ordinary man that had an extraordinary impact on Howe Military School, as exemplified by the frequent visits by former cadets and faculty to his home long after retirement.

He was a 32nd Degree Mason, an emergency medical technician for the Howe Volunteer Fire Department, and a member of Saint James Episcopal Church in Howe, Indiana. He was very proud of his family, an avid watcher of CNN and the Weather Channel, and loved to fish and mow his lawn. He will be deeply missed.

In August of 2010, he and his loving wife of 53 years left Indiana for the kinder weather in Georgia, where he could sit and watch wildlife in his back yard almost year around. Suffering a massive stroke in November 2010, he never fully recovered.

He is preceded in death by his parents William and Molly (Smith) Trout; brothers Paul, Noah, and Mack; sisters Mildred and Penny, and a granddaughter, Effie Grace.
He is survived by his wife, Doris A. (Williams) Trout, four children, and their families:

• Pam and Scott Warren of Fayetteville GA with children Matthew and Mariah;
• William C. and Andrea (Dill) Trout, Jr. of Hurst TX with children Zachary, and Ashlyn;
• Ron, and Becky (Sale) Trout of Texarkana, TX and Ron’s children Nickolas, Elizabeth, Emily, Erin, and Elycia in Gypsum, KS; and
• LTC Clifton and Ginger (Roose) Trout of Fort Belvoir, VA with children Jackson, Carter, and Tyler.

Three sisters and families survive, Clara and Bob Marks; Wanda and Norman Balcomb; Ann and John Ginter; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 12, 2011, at 2:00 pm in the St. James Chapel on the Howe Military School campus, followed by a celebration of his life at the Howe Mansion.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations in memory of William C. Trout to Healthfield Hospice, 2525 Hwy 34 East, Newnan, GA 30265.

Housing is available through The Howe School on November 12th in Delta Company, $10 per person.

Reading Time Established on Tuesdays and Thursdays

Beginning Tuesday, October 25th, all students and faculty members will be reading quietly from 3:40 P.M. - 4:00 P.M. on Tuesdays and Thursdays each week to promote reading throughout campus. Books and magazines will be available for students in each room, or students may bring books from home when they return from Fall Break. So, while you're out and about during Fall Break, be sure to come back with some reading materials.

As well, we are looking into getting the LaGrange County Library Book Mobile here to help with providing reading materials. Other staff members are more than welcome to come over and sit in a room and read with us! The more the merrier!

JH Cross Country Update

Last Tuesday, the junior high cross country team traveled to Fairfield to face three teams. The team is continuing to show improvements in their times at each race. Cadet Glazman dropped his time to a personal best of 12:38. Cadet Phillips also had a personal best of 22:12. The Howe team won against Bethany Christian with a score of 15 to 50. Running against Elkhart Christian, Glazman placed third, Nailor placed fourth, and Yanakeff placed tenth. The score was Elkhart Christian 21, Howe 40. Running against Fairfield, Glazman placed sixth, Nailor placed ninth, and Yanakeff placed tenth. The score was Fairfield 15, Howe 48. It was a nice night for a run.

Last Thursday, the junior high cross country team traveled down the road to face our rival Lakeland. Even though Lakeland had 32 runners to our seven, we had several personal bests in the race. Cadet Glazman ran an excellent race with a time of 12:35, his personal best. Cadet Nailor was two seconds off from running his personal best (13:24). Cadet Yanakeff ran his personal best with a time of 14:11, as did Cadets Gerren and Phillips with times of 19:19 and 21:39 respectively. The final score was Lakeland 16, Howe 47.

Volleyball Team Stays Strong Against F.W. Canterbury

The Lady Wildcats traveled down to Ft. Wayne Canterbury last Thursday to face our hardest opponent of the season. We did not come out victorious; however, Howe finally pulled out some skills we’ve been working on in practice that made us feel victorious! I was proud of how the girls worked together as a team, and they were not afraid of the other team’s hard serves, or powerful spikes. Tayler White was again a stand-out at the game with a perfect block on Canterbury, as well as 3 aces, 2 digs, & 2 assists. Crystal Vaughn also did a great job with a beautiful spike that went untouched by our opponents and also blocked a couple of killer spikes. A great effort made by all of the ladies!

George Douglass Named Superintendent

In April 2011, The Howe School Board of Trustees approved a three-year plan to “right-size” the school. The first year (2010-11) was a year of “stabilization” led by Chief Operating Officer, Mr. James Rosebush. The second year is intended to be a “transition year” and the third year an “emergent” year in which the school will be able to stand on its own. The Howe School would like to express its gratitude and respect for Mr. Rosebush who moved the school rapidly in the right direction.

On September 16, 2011 at its scheduled meeting, the Board of Trustees entered the “transition” year by appointing Colonel George Douglass, a 1960 Howe alumnus, as superintendent replacing Mr. Rosebush.

Following George‟s graduation from Howe, he completed his studies at Heidelberg College in Tiffin, OH while working with the local sheriff‟s department. He later attended Kent State University where he received his master‟s degree. After college he joined the US Army and completed Officers Candidate School at Fort Benning, GA. His military career includes U.S. Army Ranger School and serving his country in Vietnam where he earned the Purple Heart, two bronze stars with oak leaf clusters for valor, the combat infantryman badge, and the Vietnam campaign ribbon. In all, he received 20 awards while serving his country. He also served in Okinawa, Puerto Rico, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and Burma where he worked for the US Defense Attache and the Army Attache. George also completed Command and General Staff College at Levenworth, KS.

Since his return to Howe in 1993, Col. Douglass has served as commandant, senior army instructor, assistant chaplain, and deacon and has been a positive role model to the Corps of Cadets. He and his daughter Shannan became the first father-daughter graduates of Howe. He served three years on the Alumni Board of Directors and was recently named Arch Deacon for the Episcopal Diocese of Northern Indiana by Bishop Edward Little II and Alumnus of the Year by the Howe Alumni Association. He also serves on the Lagrange County Sheriff‟s Department as chaplain.

Col. Douglass commented that the last word in Howe is „we‟. WE—all of us—will make this happen. We need students and the financial support of the Howe family—in any amount. Donations will go to the operations of the school unless otherwise restricted to a specific area.

Volleyball Team Plays Hard In Westview Tourney

The Lady Wildcats traveled to Westview for their JV tournament yesterday, and although we didn’t come away with any wins, we did have some great effort from a few of our ladies. Lily Wojtas had an ace and Brittany Dunlap had a dig on a spike. Winnie Lo was on fire with her serves yesterday scoring 8 points and 3 of them were aces! Crystal Vaughn had 6 digs and 1 block. Our MVP yesterday was no doubt Tayler White - she was all over the court and has the floor burns to prove it! She served up 2 aces and dug up 10 volleyballs - great effort Tayler!

The ladies have a busy week traveling to Ft. Wayne on Thursday and Saturday this week for their matches.

Soccer Team Runs Into A Tough LaLumiere Team

Last night, the Howe soccer team played host to La Lumiere and lost the contest by a score of 6-2. The two Howe goals were scored by David Sherman-Hay for his 3rd and 4th goals of the season and Manzi Murangira scored his 1st of the season. The score was 0-0 with 30 seconds remaining in the first half when LaLumiere was able to get two scores very quickly. From there LaLumiere had control of the game the rest of the way out. The Howe cadets battled very hard and did not give up. Progress is still being made as far as teamwork and we will look to build on that for the next couple of contests.

Tennis Team Drops Contest to Tough Lakeland Squad

Last Friday, the tennis team traveled to local rival Lakeland. The weather was perfect for a tennis match. The Howe tennis team was defeated 0-8, but many of the tennis members played some of their best tennis of the season.

The doubles team of Tom Baker and Leo Samora were mentally in sync and gave Lakeland a run for their money. Ultimately the Howe doubles team was defeated, but prior to their defeat they were on FIRE! Our other doubles team, seniors Brett Hendricks and Shengwei Ma, are finding their groove as doubles partners. They are making good shots and are communicating well as a team.

Kyle Harrison had moved up a spot in the line-up for the Lakeland match and was playing number 2 Varsity singles. Kyle had some great volleys with his opponent.

The JV team proved that cool weather makes them heat up the courts. Freshman, and new singles player, Griffin Toombs was barely defeated in a 7-9 match. Griffin’s serves were consistently placed well and he was a fierce opponent. Justin Hu was another amazing JV singles player. As Justin’s opponent struggled for each point, Justin made his returns look natural and as if playing tennis required no effort at all.

Many Howe tennis parents came to the Lakeland match. It was great to have the support of so many fans. Thank you moms and dads!

Weather permitting, the Howe tennis team has a home match scheduled for Tuesday evening.

Tennis Team Shows Improvement Against West Noble

Last Thursday, the tennis team faced West Noble. West Noble is always a force to be reckoned with. This year was no exception.

Matt McDonald was the MVP of the match. He faced an incredibly tall West Noble Charger and never backed down. Matt eventually lost in two sets 1-6, 3-6, but he put forth lots of energy and determination for every hard fought point.

Spencer Phillips played his hardest against West Noble’s number one singles player. Spencer’s serves were some of the best he’s had all season, but his opponent was still able to walk away with a 1-6, 0-6 victory.

The doubles team of Tom Baker and Leo Samora showed how important it is to be in sync with your doubles partner. Tom and Leo are great friends on and off the court. This has helped them to develop into a successful doubles team. Although the score cards didn’t reflect a victory for them, Tom and Leo were winners by this coach’s standards.

The final results of the match against West Noble were 0-5. The tennis team travels to in-county rival Lakeland tonight.

Football Fights To The End Against Mendon

Last Thursday, the Wildcat football team struggled to get out of the gates against the Mendon Hornets. A rocky start offensively and some breakdowns in assignments defensively resulted in a 27-0 deficit at halftime.

After a few “words of encouragement” at halftime, from Coach Wenzel and Coach Dimos, the team responded in their opening possession by marching the ball 75 yards down the field. Igor Zinyak scored on a three yard wedge play that was led by great line blocking of Gore, Roberts, Leisure, Whitcomb, Davis, Holliday and Schubert.

After the kickoff, Mendon broke through several would-be tacklers to make the score 33-6. Again, the Wildcats responded by marching the ball down the field on an 80-yard drive which was capped off by a Jack Harter quarterback bootleg for a 13-yard touchdown run. The defense held strong as long as they could, but the Hornets found the end zone one more time to close out the game.

The Wildcats dropped the contest by a score of 43-12. The ground attack of Macut, Kanamugire, and Zinyak churned out 220 yards of offense, much of which was earned in the 2nd half. If the team plays the next contests with as much “intestinal fortitude” as they showed in the 2nd half, the team should be able to secure victories over their upcoming opponents. The Cadet Wildcat football team will be back in action at home on September 24th vs. Elkhart Christian. Kickoff is slated for 11 a.m. Support the Cadets in their quest for another home victory!

Soccer Team Faces Tough Fort Wayne Fusion Squad

Last Thursday, the Wildcat soccer team played the Fort Wayne Fusion in Ft. Wayne. We were expecting a very good team going in according to one of our sources in the area and it was a tough game as expected. We played the first half very well except for three momentarily lapses in focus which cost us three goals. Other than those three minutes or so of not being focused we played very strong. The second half was more of the same without the lapses in concentration. We only gave up one goal in the second half! David Sherman-Hay scored two goals for us in the second half which put us in reach of their four. We lost the game 4-2 but improved greatly in several areas of the game and if we can continue to improve we will find success yet. it was a lot of fun to see us communicate better, keep our spacing on the field and use our teammates in the common goal of having success. I was very impressed with how we played, although still disappointed that we lost. Losing is not something that any one person should get used to, but we will use that feeling to ignite the competitive fire inside of us.

Junior High Cross Country Results vs. Central/West Noble

The junior high cross-country team had a beautiful night to run their race. They faced two tough opponents in Central Noble and West Noble. West Noble ran in their usual pack of eight runners and cadets Glazman and Nailor did their best to stay with them. Cadet Glazman was the only Howe runner to place against West Noble with an eighth place finish followed closely by Cadet Nailor with a thirteenth place finish. Both Glazman and Nailor ran their personal best last night with times of 13:06 and 13:23 respectively. Against Central Noble Cadets Glazman and Nailor placed third and fifth. The winning time was taken by Central Noble in 11:33. Cadet Yanakeff placed ninth against Central Noble with a time of 18:29. Cadet Gerren ran his race in 22:59, Cadet Phillips and Thompson both crossed the finish line with a time of 25:35. The final score was West Noble 15, Howe 75 and Central Noble 20, Howe 40. Howe takes on Elkhart Christian and Fairfield on Tuesday at Fairfield.

I would like to take this time to congratulate the Corps of Cadets on a wonderfully executed 9/11 Ceremony. They all looked outstanding. The quality of their performance showed a true reverence for the first responders that lost their lives as they sought to save those around them. Boys' Tennis Results vs. Prairie Heights

Last night the tennis team hosted Prairie Heights. Spencer Phillips is struggling to defend his top ranking spot as he faces all of the number one Varsity players from the opposing teams. Spencer will build his confidence as the season progresses and will show those opponents that he is a force to be reckoned with. Kyle Harrison played the best match of the night. Kyle’s serves and volleys were some of the best of the season. Kyle gave his opponent a run for his money, but finally lost in the second set 7-9.

The doubles teams are still struggling to find their niche with the perfect partner. Practices will see a shuffling of partners to try to strengthen the lineup. The tennis team will face their toughest opponent of the season on Thursday night at the Howe courts when we face West Noble.

The soccer team played in-county rival Lakeland last night on their field. Lets just say that we ran into a great team. Lakeland dictated the tempo of the game and basically did what they wanted to do. The final score was 0-10 with Lakeland getting the win. Again, the Howe Wildcats played hard and their effort was not a question. I believe that we learned a lot during the game of where we want to be in the future as a team and individual skill. Life and sports is about getting back up after you are knocked down and continuing to move forward. The Wildcats will move forward and prepare for their next contest.

Wallaceburg Gives Football Team Trouble

On Saturday, The Wildcats played host to an extremely talented Wallaceburg squad from Ontario, Canada. The Cadets from Howe struggled to compete and dropped the contest 0-47. Defensively, Howe had players in position to make plays, but Wallaceburg’s size and speed prevailed. By the 4th quarter, there wasn’t much gas in the tank. The defense was charged by Zinyak’s 12 tackles, Kanamugire’s 8 tackles, and Mellen’s 7 tackles. The boys will regroup as they travel to Mendon to play the Hornets at 6:30 p.m on Thursday.

Junior High Cross Country Results vs. Prairie Heights

The junior high cross-country team traveled to Prairie Heights last night for a soggy 1.8 mile race. The course was hilly and wooded, but cadets Glazman and Nailor raced through it to place first and second for Howe. Their times were 13:33 and 13:41 respectively. Cadet Yanakeff placed ninth in the race with a time of 15:53, followed by Cadet Thompson with a time of 18:21. Cadets Gerren and E. Phillips crossed the finish line in their first race with times of 20:30 and 22:50. The team came away with four ribbons last night in a well-run and very close race. Unfortunately, we were unable to defeat Prairie Heights. The final score was 25 to 34. The team runs again on September 15 against Central Noble and West Noble at West Noble.

Boys' Tennis Shines vs. Central Noble

Although the weather was dreary, the tennis team was certainly shining last night. In our first match against an opponent that showed up for competition, the tennis team performed to the highest of standards. In his first ever tennis match, senior Matt McDonald came close to a victory. He faced a tough opponent that has had years of experience. Matt barely lost in 2-6, 4-6 sets. I expect Matt to get better and better as the tennis season progresses. The JV tennis team, affectionately nicknamed “The Asian Invasion,” was an intimidating force last night. Senior Shengwei Ma won his first tennis match as a Howe tennis player. Ma dominated his opponent 8-5. Qisen Hu and Zhongyang Li gave their opponents a run for their money before finally succumbing to their Central Noble opponents 7-9. The weather should improve for the team’s next match, which is Monday versus Prairie Heights, at 4:30. I know the tennis team would appreciate any fans that could come (even for a few minutes) to catch part of their match.

Soccer Team Shows Improvement Against Central Noble

Last night the Wildcat soccer team took on Central Noble at their place. The weather was chilly with light rain falling throughout the game. It was a tight match the whole first half with both teams pushing the ball into the other team's territory. Central Noble did get a goal late in the first half to go up 1-0, but the Wildcats kept pushing and battling until the halftime whistle was upon us. The team regrouped at the half and started the second half with a purpose. I really felt like the players could sense how close they were to winning this game with just a few things going their way. Early in the second half David Sherman-Hay made a great pass across the field to Ben Stevenson who used his head to put it into the goal! At this point we were tied 1-1 and victory was only one goal away. The players continued to play hard the rest of the game. Later, Central Noble added another goal and then added two more late in the game to hand us the loss 1-4. Again the Wildcats of Howe played a more complete game then they have played all season. They had many chances to score goals tonight, they just need to learn to finish those opportunities. Our next game is this Friday at The Howe School vs. Lakeland Christian. We are looking to finish all opportunities within the game and rise up victorious. I know the players would love to see a great crowd so come cheer us on.

Soccer Falls To Howardsville Christian, But Still Improving

Last night we ran into a tough Howardsville Christian soccer team who handed us a 6-1 defeat. The game was 1-0 for most of the first half before they found open ground and got two quick goals and put us down 3-0 going into half time. In the second half, it was more of the same from the first half. We did have one shining moment in the second half when David Sherman-Hay scored his first goal of the season and our only goal of the game. The team as a whole is still improving, every game, despite the score. Once we get them all playing on the same page and with the same knowledge of what their role is we are going to scare some teams out there. I look forward to tonight's match at Central Noble and coming home with our first win!

Football Wins Home Opener Against Fremont

Last night, the Wildcat football club emerged victorious over Fremont 24-0. The defense set the tone by only allowing 15 yards rushing and 22 yards passing. Igor Zinyak led the defense with 10 tackles followed by Austin Macut's 6 tackles. Simon Holzer provided 2 exciting interceptions. Jackson Jolicouer snagged an interception late in the 3rd quarter to rob the Fremont offense.

The offense struggled to hang on to the football, but managed 3 successful drives that resulted in scores. Igor Zinyak grounded out 83 yards on 18 carries and provided 2 touchdowns and a 2-point conversion. Patrick Kanamugire had 49 yards on 12 carries and also provided a touchdown and 2-point conversion. A rare Howe pass led to a successful final 2-point conversion as Jack Harter connected with Lawrence Gore in the end zone.

The first win of the season provides momentum as the Cadet Wildcats host Wallaceburg Secondary this Saturday at 11 a.m.

Howe School Cadet Travels to Martin Luther King, Jr. Dedication Met by Hurricane Irene

The staff at The Howe School, a private boarding school for grades 7 – 12, located in northern Indiana, was excited when they learned 1st Sgt. Lawrence Gore, a junior at their school, would be attending the unveiling and dedication of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial on Sunday, August 28. However, when Cadet Gore arrived in Washington, DC last Friday, he was caught up in the preparations of Hurricane Irene. The MLK Memorial dedication will now take place at a later date.

Cadet Gore, a second-year student at The Howe School, was selected to be a part of this history in the making, with the help of his aunt, C.J. Jordan. Gore stated, “I wanted to be there for the opening of the memorial, but was disappointed when I arrived and learned everything had been postponed. I am African-American, and Martin Luther King made a difference when he fought for people's rights. His dream of possibility and hope, freedom and democracy are all things that are important to me.”

Howe’s Chief Operating Officer, James Rosebush, who is from Washington DC, met Cadet Gore at the Baltimore Airport Friday afternoon. Although the dedication had already been postponed by then, Gore was able to enjoy a Washington adventure of tours and sightseeing. Those places included Arlington National Cemetery, the WW II and Vietnam Memorials, the State Department, Federal Reserve Building, MLK Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, House Office Building, House Chamber, Capitol Rotunda, Congressman Marlin Stutzman’s office and a drive by of the White House, Federal Agencies, Smithsonian and other museums. Ellen R. Carlson, Staff Assistant for Congressman Stutzman stated, “He is a good listener, and I sincerely wish him every success in his political pursuits.”

1st Sgt. Gore is the son of Laverne Jones Gore of Cleveland, Ohio.

Brent Short Hired As New LD Teacher

The Howe School announced earlier this year the expansion of its 2011-2012 fall academic capabilities with the addition of a learning differences program. The school has long been committed to recognizing and respecting differentiated learning styles. Through small class size and personal coaching and counseling, these different styles have yielded effective teaching and other flexible strategies.

Brent Short has joined The Howe School teaching staff for the 2011-2012 school year and will take on the responsibility of the LD teacher for all grades within the school. In addition to his duties in the classroom, he will coach varsity soccer and hopes to help establish a girls’ basketball program at Howe. Prior to his arrival at Howe, he was the Emotional Disabilities Consultant for all five schools within the Lakeland School Corporation since 2005. Brent also worked for the Middlebury Community Schools and Bashor Children’s Home in Goshen, IN.

During his time in the public school system, he coached 10+ years of varsity baseball, football, girls’ basketball and little league baseball. He also served on several committees that helped in the success of the students and the school itself. He was a member of the CPI team (crisis prevention intervention team), the student support committee at Lakeland Middle School, and the PL221 improvement team. Outside of his classroom responsibilities, Brent has always been involved in athletics and helping young minds of tomorrow become more successful.

In Brent’s new position, he will not only be working with students and families, but also with the teaching staff as a key member of the academic team under the direction of Dean of Academics, Leanne DeFelice. “We are excited about the new LD program at Howe,” says Dean DeFelice. “We are eager to see the students’ increase of success in the classroom and to be able to provide them with the positive self-assurance that they will become great leaders.”

Brent holds a Bachelor of Science Degree from Indiana State University in Special Education, Mild Disabilities k-12; and a license in Mild Interventions k-12 from Indiana Wesleyan. He was also a catcher for the Indiana State baseball team. He has a future interest in continuing his studies towards Educational Leadership. Brent hopes to one day become a school administrator.

Brent and his wife Amber have two sons, Brayden, 8 and Brock, 6. They attend Millersburg Elementary School. Amber is the Title I teacher at Wolcott Mills Elementary and is an assistant volleyball coach here at THS.

Soccer Team Falls To a Tough Hamilton Squad

The Wildcat soccer team hosted the Hamilton Marines in the first home match of the season. We lost on the scoreboard 1-8. However, we did get our first goal of the season in the second half by Eriobuna Ikem "The Nigerian Nightmare" as we call him within the team. We had 14 players this time around, which really helped with giving our guys and girls a breather when needed. The effort in this game by the players was better, in spurts, but we are working on making that happen as a group for a bigger portion of the minutes! We have a lot of work to do in a short amount of time to get ready for our next contest Thursday at home against Prairie Heights. As long as we can continue to improve in each game, fundamentally, we should be a force in the sectional tournament at the end of the season.

Soccer Team Drops Season Opener

In our first contest, against South Bend Community Baptist, the Wildcats lost 0-3. We were limited with 12 players, but the players who were there played hard and as coaches that's all we can ask for. We had some stand out performances by Ben Stevenson and Taylor Walton who both shared goalie duties. They both gave great individual effort in that spot and turned a lot of shots away. We saw a lot of positives that we can use to build on for the rest of the season.

Football Loses Tough Season Opener Against Lakeland

It was a beautiful day for a football game on Saturday as the Cadet Wildcats Football team traveled to LaGrange, IN to square off against the Lakeland Lakers. The Lakers proved to be a very tough opponent fresh off a win over Prairie Heights. The first game jitters were evident as the men from Howe struggled early on.

Defensively, Howe found it difficult to defend the pass-happy Laker squad, giving up 2 quick touchdowns in the first quarter. After a couple of defensive adjustments, the team hankered down, only allowing another score in the 4th quarter. The stingy run defense allowed a meager 51 yards on the ground, but the Wildcats couldn’t overcome the 244 yards gained in the air.

The blocking of Nick Davis and Simon Holzer allowed Igor Zinyak to pace the offense with 135 yards rushing on 22 carries. Patrick Kangamugire rumbled for 62 yards on the ground on 10 carries. Quarterback Eli Schaap connected with Austin Macut on a rare Howe pass attempt for a 47 yard gain. The offense produced over 250 yards of offense but were unable to cross the goal line for a score.

The Cadet Wildcats have a lot of work to do before taking on back-to-back playoff qualifiers- the Michigan Lutheran Titans. Kickoff occurs at 7 p.m. at New Buffalo High School (MI) this Thursday night, September 1st.

Baseball Splits Double Header with Harding

The baseball team split a doubleheader at Harding High in Fort Wayne on Saturday. Blake Sopko set the tone in game one by striking out 14 Harding hitters and allowing only one run as the Wildcats defeated the hosts, 9-1. Sopko also smashed a fourth-inning two-run home run which made it 6-0 at that point. Kyle Dostie-First added two hits and two runs scored. Zach Mellen, Gerritt Haines and Ben Stevenson also hit safely for Howe.

Game two proved to be a different story for the Wildcats as Harding capitalized on Howe miscues for a 12-2 final. Josh Seldenright struck out six in four innings of work. Blake Sopko had an RBI-double in the fifth inning, and Crayton Caudill collected the Wildcats’ other hit in the ball game. Howe threatened to extend the game in the fifth after Charles Steele and Brandon Leisure drew walks, but a spectacular play by the Harding right fielder on Seldenright’s line drive ended the game.

The Howe School Donates Unused Computer Items

On April 20, technology teacher Michael Reed and two seniors, Chris Hoffecker and Glenn Davis, delivered 105 17-inch flat panel monitors, USB keyboards and computer mice to PC’s for Youth.

PC’s For Youth is a 501(C)(3) organization located in LaGrange that gives free, refurbished computers to students in LaGrange, Noble, Steuben, DeKalb and Elkhart counties to use for educational purposes.

“It was an honor to be involved with the donation of our unused computer equipment and to know that it will help out students in the local area,” stated Michael Reed, Technology teacher at The Howe School.

Executive Director of PC’s for Youth Colton Strawser said, “I really appreciate this large donation of computer equipment from The Howe School. ‘Helping to bridge the digital divide in our community’ is what our organization is all about. Without donations like this, we would not be able to continue our mission of getting computers to students in LaGrange, Noble, Steuben, DeKalb and parts of Elkhart counties.”

Baseball Struggles Against Elkhart Christian

The baseball Team traveled to Elkhart to take on Elkhart Christian last night. While the outcome was not favorable for the Wildcats, there were some bright spots. Zach Mellen drove in Ryan Patterson and Josh Seldenright who both reached with hits. Justin Duchene-Thornwell set up the scoring by grounding to the right side of the infield to move Patterson and Seldenright into scoring position. Patterson knocked in Blake Sopko, who started the inning with a ringing double to left center field. Crayton Caudill picked up another RBI when he drove in Patterson in the first inning. Caudill scored when Gerritt Haines was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Patterson, Caudill, and Seldenright all took the hill for the Wildcats. Patterson had not thrown a pitch yet this season, but agreed to give it a go, in attempt to save some arms for Saturday’s doubleheader. Ryan had a tough go of it as did Caudill, but both are to be commended for their efforts. Seldenright pitched very well, but was the victim of too many Howe errors.

The team will travel to Fort Wayne for a doubleheader with Harding on Saturday.

Yesterday the varsity golf team traveled to Bridgewater West Golf Course to take on Eastside. The Howe team played with determination, despite having a bad hole or two. Because of this determination, The Howe School was able to pull out a victory against Eastside, 218 – 223. Jon Adams was the medalist for the match, shooting a 50. Henry Wenzel, Kun Lai, and Trent Ridenour were all vital to this victory as well since we have to use all four of their scores. Congratulations to the golfers! Our next match will be at Bridgewater East Golf Course on Tuesday.

Girls' Tennis Prepares for Sectionals

The Lady Wildcats had their last match yesterday against Prairie Heights. We lost 4-1, but the girls played tough in the heat of the day. Our only win came from the #1 doubles team of Christine Slamkowski & Winnie Lo (6-1, 6-2). We had a couple of matches that went into the 3rd set; Zhongyi Liu went into her 3rd (2-6, 6-1, 0-6), and Leslie Rupp & Elizabeth Hasse went into their 3rd as well (6-2, 3-6, 4-6). Howe played through the heat, and certainly didn’t go down without a fight!

Tayler White, Zhongyi Liu, Brooklynn McGuire, Christine Slamkowski, Winnie Lo, Leslie Rupp, and Elizabeth Hasse will be preparing for tennis sectionals next week, so wish them luck!

Varsity Track Results vs. Bethany Christian

Howe hosted Bethany Christian in a late season track meet last night. Despite a strong effort from the Wildcats, Bethany Christian went home with the victory 67 to 57. Even with a loss, Howe took first in several events including the 110m hurdles, high jump, discus, long jump, shot put and 300m hurdles. Howe's domination in the field events was not enough, however, as Bethany Christian took first and second in many of the running events. Howe travels to Prairie Heights Monday and looks forward to sectionals in one week.

Baseball Comes Up Short Against Lakewood Park

The baseball team dropped its game with Lakewood Park 15-5 Tuesday night. Josh Seldenright swatted a three-run home run to spark the five-run fifth-inning comeback which fell short. Ryan Patterson doubled and Crayton Caudill knocked him in for the fourth run. Caudill scampered home with the Wildcats’ fifth run on a Lakewood wild pitch. Blake Sopko was 3-for-3 at the dish to raise his batting average on the season to .567.

Baseball Holds off Prairie Heights for Win

The baseball team defeated Prairie Heights 3-2 on May 9th. Josh Seldenright had his best outing of the season, giving up only four hits and striking out seven over six innings. Ryan Patterson had three hits, including a double, and scored the winning run on Crayton Caudill’s two-out hit in the sixth inning. Blake Sopko caught six innings, then took the mound to close the game for Howe in the seventh. He struck out the side after a Heights’ hitter slapped a hit to right field. Sopko also doubled in the first inning, reached third, then stole home for the Wildcats’ second run. Ben Stevenson, Gerritt HainesKyle Dostie-First all had hits for Howe. The team turned in its best defensive effort of the season and cut down the tying run on a perfect relay from Haines to Dostie-First to Sopko off a Panther double in the bottom of the fifth.

Baseball Falls to F.W. Canterbury

The baseball team traveled to Fort Wayne on May 5th to take on Canterbury. The Wildcats dropped the contest 14-4 to the host Cavaliers in 5 innings. However, team morale was high as we finally had some sunny skies to play under. Howe showed some growth as a ball club as Austin McLallin recorded his first hit of the season, which was a line shot at the shortstop, who was handcuffed, and Ryan Patterson’s first RBI of the season in the third inning. Josh Seldenright started for Howe and pitched four solid innings, striking out two Cavaliers. Canterbury squared him up a couple of times, though, and four hit batsmen didn’t help his cause. Josh had a good day at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and a run scored. Crayton Caudill doubled to lead off the second inning and scored on Kyle Dostie-First’s single. Blake Sopko continued his hot hitting with a 2-for-3 day with a run scored, and Charles Steele reached twice on walks and scored a run. Ben Stevenson started the game with a single and finished 1-for-3.

Baseball Has Tough First Inning Against Hamilton

On Monday, the Baseball team tried to play through the rust of being off for nearly two weeks due to weather. The Wildcats couldn’t overcome an 11-run first inning and fell to Hamilton 13-3. Despite the rocky first, Sopko settled in and struck out 11 Marines and blanked the opposition in innings 2 through 4.

There were some bright spots for Howe as Ryan Patterson picked up his first hit of the season. Zach Mellen also notched his first hit and RBI of the season in the Wildcats’ three-run fourth. Crayton Caudill added a two-run double in the fourth as well and Sopko started the two-out rally with a hit.

The team will travel to Fort Wayne to take on Canterbury next.

Varsity Track Results from Central Noble Invite

The track team participated in an 8-team invitational at Central Noble last Friday evening. The weather was good though the field was wet from the previous days’ rain.

Zhongyang Li achieved his personal best time in the 3200 meter run, John Jones set the school records in both discus and shot put, taking home first-place ribbons and a T-shirt for each, and Vincent Aleksandravicius scored points for Howe with a high jump of 5’ 8”.

Overall it was a tough night for The Howe School; the team scored 24 points and placed last overall. This week we’ll be improving and preparing for the next meet at Prairie Heights scheduled for May 16.

Record Collection for Soldiers' Angels Donations

The 7th grade class finished packing boxes for our Soldiers’ Angels donations last Friday. I am pleased to announce a new record, we packed 20 boxes! Thanks to the generous donations from students, parents, faculty, staff and members of the community, we were able to double our original goal! The care packages included items such as snacks, movies, health care items and books.

Each box also included a personally made card from the students thanking the soldiers for their service. Several of the boxes will be sent to Cadet Dostie-First’s uncle who is in the deployment process to Afghanistan. Former Battalion Commander Luis Lopez, who is currently in Afghanistan, will also receive goodies. The remaining packages will be sent to four different units in Afghanistan.

In addition to sending packages overseas, we also had a few odds and ends items that we were able to donate in Howe’s name to the local Soldiers’ Angels organization. We were also able to donate several boxes of leftover books to Paws and Claws Book Store.

I am very proud of the 7th grade class for their hard work and dedication to this very worthy service project. On behalf of them, I would like to thank everyone who made it possible. Thank you!
