Former Trustee Thomas Storer ’55 Will Never Be Forgotten As a Son of Howe



Thomas B. Storer, former Director of the DuPont Human Resources Company, passed away on Friday, August 24, 2012.

Tom was born in Gary, IN in 1937 to Dr. and Mrs. William R. Storer.

Tom is survived by his wife of 53 years, Nancy; daughter, Cindie Stilwell and her husband Doug, and their three children, Brad, Adam and Lindsay; daughter Cheryl Collins and her daughter Alexa of Frederickesburg, VA. He is also survived by a brother, Dr. William R. Storer Jr. and his wife Janet of Indianapolis, IN, and a sister Linette Wold of Phoenix, AZ.

Tom attended Howe Military School in Howe, IN from the age of 10 to 18. He was number one in his class every year and attained the top rank of Battalion Commander his senior year. He played football all eight years and was captain of the team his senior year. Tom went to Purdue University graduating in 1959 with a Bachelors Degree in Chemical Engineering. The summer of 1958 he worked for DuPont in Parkersburg, WV as an engineer. After graduating from Purdue he worked for DuPont at the Marshall Lab in Philadelphia, PA doing development work in finishes. In 1960 he was transferred to the Chicago plant where he worked in the plant lab and was plant supervisor. Starting in 1964 he was transferred to Ft. Madison, IA and worked there as a technical supervisor. In 1966 he became manufacturing supervisor and worked at that position until Dec. of 1970 when he was transferred to Wilmington, DE. From 1970 to 1995 Tom moved through various assignments in Human Resources including F&F, Fibers and ERD. Tom was active in the development of centralized human resources and the utilization of computers in HR in which DuPont became a leader in that field. He was assigned to work with the American Management Association, and active in the support of several AMA committees.

Over the years, Tom was involved in many activities. He counseled the Delaware Junior Achievement Company. His group came in sixth place in a national competition. Tom was active at Chester Bethel United Methodist Church. He taught a contemporary adult Sunday school class for twenty-eight years. He was finance chairman for over ten years and started an endowment fund that has provided the church with long term stability.

In 1979 Tom and his family welcomed into their home Yvonne Groeneveld, an exchange student from The Netherlands. Yvonne lived with them for one year and since then she and her family have maintained a close relationship.

Tom served on the Board of Trustees at Howe Military School. Since he attended this school from a young age it held a special place in his heart and he supported it by dedicating his time and financial resources. He worked with the Purdue Chemical Engineering School faculty and received an award on March 13, 1996 for Outstanding Chemical Engineer BS'59.

After Tom retired he enjoyed spending more time in their summer home in Stone Harbor, NJ with family and friends.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 1, 2012 at 11:00 AM at the Chester Bethel United Methodist Church, 2619 Foulk Road, Wilmington, DE. A Visitation will be held Friday, August 31, 2012 from 7 to 9 PM at Chandler Funeral Home, 2506 Concord, Pike, Wilmington, DE. Interment will be private.
